Janina Totzauer’s artistic practice revolves around the question of how we make sense of our existence. It constantly deals with the role humans play on Earth by spanning the arch between the past and a post-anthropocene future. Her video installations take inspiration from her research into existentialist philosophies and human rituals while living in Germany and Moçambique. The videos consist of successive performative acts executed by the artist herself. The sisyphus-like performances circle around the concept of Absurdism in which humankind can only seek sense in understanding the absurdity of existence. Totzauer creates special objects that are used in the performances and remain as relics in the exhibition space.
